NEVADA THEATRE 6/1: The Onyx Downtown presents our Wandering Souls series, a globetrotting cinematic odyssey that highlights the transformative and transcendental nature of the road movie. There is nothing quite like WILD AT HEART, a uniquely insane romantic black-comedy that frequently cites THE WIZARD OF OZ. It’s no surprise, then, that it’s written and directed by the late great David Lynch, paired with a dream cast that includes frequent collaborator Laura Dern, Nicolas Cage, Willem Dafoe, Isabella Rossellini, and Harry Dean Stanton. The film follows passionate lovers Sailor Ripley (Cage) and Lula Fortune (Dern), as they reunite after Sailor’s stint in prison for a self-defense killing. The pair skip town to California, whilst Lula’s mother hires a hitman to end the relationship once and for all.
SUNRISE CINEMA 5/31 - Join Sunrise Cinema as we screen the film that made James Dean an eternal icon: REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE. Dean stars in a movie that shocked the United States, with a performance that still electrifies the screen 70 years after his untimely death prior to the film's release. In this archetypal drama of teenage angst and rebellion, three high school students who should lead idyllic lives in their stable, comfortable suburban families explode with a violence and sexuality that their parents cannot understand. This film--which ripped the façade from the post-war American dream to expose the rage of the country's youth--resonates with an energy that has made it a modern classic and a powerful coming-of-age story.
AFTER HOURS 6/6 - After Hours joins The Onyx Downtown in celebration of movie musicals with 1986’s LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS! Seymour, who works in a run-down flower shop on Skid Row, spends his time doing menial tasks and dreaming of his co-worker Audrey. Then, just after an eclipse of the sun, he discovers a strange plant. The exotic species draws customers, saves the flower shop from bankruptcy, and makes Seymour a hero in Audrey's eyes. But the plant has a rather unique appetite and it's getting interested in her, too.
